Jamie Johnson Judo Course Report by Sensei Keith Henson

Date: Sunday 20th June.    Location: Shidokai Judo Club
Forty Judoka took part in Jamie Johnson’s second course at our Dojo and everyone went home having added more techniques to their repertoire as well as new ways of escaping hold downs.

The first two hours consisted of a serious warm up (despite being twenty degrees outside!) followed by tuition on how to grip correctly and break the balance. This led onto the actual throws which were many and very effective. Groundwork followed with some really workable techniques.

Our smaller, less experienced, students left the mat after two hours totally shattered and, after a short break, the real work began with the more advanced students. I won’t go into detail about the throws but suffice to say if you were not on the course, but someone from your dojo was, then lookout!

Sensei Jim Lawson once again came out to see Jamie in action and I think he was suitably impressed.

I would like to thank everyone who came to the course irrespective of whether they travelled a few hundred yards or a few hundred miles to join us.  Some certainly did travel long distances, there were representatives from Kent, Cheshire, Nottinghamshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire as well as a good turnout from the host dojo in Somerset.  Everyone had a fantastic time together (especially those at the pre-course Barbeque the night before!).

Here’s to the next course and, if plans go ahead, it will be with a current World Champion!
